Indian Head Massage (Champissage)
It is a very ancient technique that is mentioned in Ayurvedic texts dating back 4000 years, and still widely practiced by women in India to keep their hair in beautiful condition. But there are also other benefits in champissage: it releases muscular tension and stimulates the flow of blood, which causes a sense of well-being in the body, allowing the mind to slow down and relax. It helps relieve headaches, eyestrain, improve concentration, eliminates muscle tension and restores joint movement. Massaging the head encourages the supply of blood to the brain, which is one of the best ways of reducing stress. Oxygen helps you think clearly and creatively - the same effect is brought about by exercising. It also aids relaxation and sleep. By working on the upper back and shoulders the massage helps locate and release tension that is being held in the body, sometimes easing away years of pent-up feelings.
The massage is done in the chair with the client fully clothed, and therefore avoids any embarrassment or anxiety, and incorporates upper back, shoulders, upper arms, neck, scalp and face. It can be performed with or without oils.
I was trained in London Centre of Indian Champissage by Mr Narendra Mehta, who is considered to be the guru of Indian Head Massage. He was the first therapist to introduce it in the UK in 1981, and has been teaching and promoting it all over the world ever since. It is thanks to him that this wonderful technique is so popular in the West now.
