Massage during and after pregnancy
Pregnancy can be a very happy and positive time, but it can also be challenging, both emotionally and physically. It is a time of change, and it places high demands on the body. My role as a massage therapist is to support the woman on her journey, and also help relieve some common complaints associated with pregnancy, such as oedema, leg cramps, headaches and backache. A calm, relaxing environment is likely to benefit the baby as well as the mother, encourage mother/baby bonding and may also play a role in optimal fetal positioning. This massage is performed with a woman lying on her side and supported by bolsters and pillows, which is considered the safest and most comfortable position for pregnancy.
After a baby is born, massage can address muscle aches induced by long hours of feeding and baby care, as well as dysfunctions that may have developed during pregnancy or labour. It can help to adjust the new mother’s body to post-pregnancy structure: otherwise, they tend to keep their shoulders and pelvic girdle rotated forward, which is typical to pregnancy, leading to neck, upper back, and low back pain later in life.
